Austin Shakespeare’s Medea

Standard

Trade in the predictable rom-com at the movie theater for the twisted, intense Greek tragedy, Euripides’ Medea. The Austin Shakespeare Company is well-known for their free performances in the park every summer (this summer, get your blanket and picnic basket ready for Macbeth), but they perform all year at different venues. Medea will be at The Long Center through early March and it’s a MUST SEE.

Medea, portrayed by the brilliant, nationally-acclaimed classical actress Franchelle Stewart Dorn, is a woman scorned—her husband, Jason, is leaving her for a princess. To help with this transition, the king has decided to banish Medea—but she won’t leave quietly, that’s for sure.

I wouldn’t dare ruin the ending for you, so all I’ll say is get ready for an emotional roller coaster—this tragic tale is warped to say the least. But that’s what makes it so fascinating!

Dorn plays Medea with such ferociousness and elegance—you fall in love with her fierce, feminist character quickly. In fact, you’re still rooting for her while she’s plotting numerous insane schemes and violent murders.

Infidelity, friendship, family, revenge, death…Medea has it all.

Buy your tickets now! Eighteen dollars a piece is an awesome deal for this show, especially since the event is held in one of The Long Center’s smaller theaters, so the experience feels really intimate.

Fair warning though—this isn’t a “pleasant” or “romantic” story. Definitely not a first-date kind of feel. Medea is what all Greek tragedies are—shocking and horrific, but solid entertainment.

HAPPY BIRTHDAAAAAAYYYY to my baby, my first novel, THE WAITING ROOM 🙂

This experience has been scary, amazing, fun, self-deprecating, empowering…an insane rush of emotions, every step of the way. From collecting dust on my laptop for years, to finally being done and selling on Amazon and at BookPeople…I’m just so happy.

I also need to thank the people in my life who have been so supportive–my parents, namely. I’ve always had a passion for reading and writing, and they’ve always been there to support me. My best friends–geez, the whining and stress they’ve had to endure from me haha, thank you guys. My readers, the first people to take a chance and buy the damn thing, the reviewers and their lovely words–I cannot express how grateful I am for you!

So let’s celebrate!

I’ve been thinking about doing another wave of giveaways, and I feel like this is the perfect time.

First 25 readers to email me get a free ecopy (please specify if you’d prefer a Mobi, PDF, or ePub file)!

I THINK I’ve made a publishing decision…

Standard

self_publishing1

If you read my post a few weeks ago, you know I have A Chance to Leave the Self-Pub World…

I think I’ve finally made a decision.

Drum roll please……………………….

I’m going to STAY put, self-pub, indie, unrepresented. Not gonna take the publisher’s offer. Not gonna sign the contract.

You might think I’m crazy. Here are the 3 main reasons for my decision:

1. The publishers that contacted me are extremely new and unheard of. They publish a LOT of erotica, which my book is NOT.

2. I worked really hard for my Amazon and Goodreads reviews and I didn’t want to lose them.

3. I’ve done pretty well marketing for myself, and after researching the publisher (and contacting their authors), I was led to believe that their marketing wouldn’t be any better than my own.

This doesn’t mean I’m not opening to signing a contract in the future- with a publisher more fitting for my novel and I. But if that never happens, I’ll be fine 🙂 The self-pub world IS pretty amazing, after all.

WordPress Fantasies…

Standard

wordpress-love

Number 1 fantasy? Every person who follows me on WordPress writes me an Amazon review for THE WAITING ROOM.

[that would be over 1,100 people…]

Fantasy #2: every person who follows me on Twitter then writes a review as well.

[almost 3,000 people]

Fellow authors- do you have these daydreams as well?! I mean, I could go on and on…every single person who has liked my author Facebook page (btw, when I reach 500 likes I’m doing a signed book giveaway!), every single person who I’m personally friends with on Facebook…every single person who I’m actually friends with…every single family member.

WordPress friends- go ahead, make my fantasy come true, haha!

A Chance to Leave the Self-Pub World…what to do?!

Standard

selfpub

That’s right, I have an opportunity to float on over to the traditional publishing world! Well, two opportunities actually- in the last few weeks, I’ve had TWO offers from two very different indie publishers. It should be a dream come true, right? Right?! How could I even be considering turning them both down?

Sigh.

So many things to think about here.

First of all, one of the publishers is e-book only. BUT, I’d get to keep the print rights- so technically, I’d still be self-published with the paperback version. I don’t know how I feel about that though- they wouldn’t be linked on Amazon. Different edits, different covers…it’d be like having two completely different books out there…

Not to mention, I LOVE my current cover. And then there’s the reviews to think about…I cherish each and every review I’ve received on Amazon and Goodreads. If I take the book down and sign a contract with a publisher, I lose all of those kind words that are sooo dear to me!

While I’m rambling, let’s go ahead and throw in the bizarre moral obligation I feel to the wonderful self-pub world. A strange guilt has washed over me at the mere thought of abandoning my proud post as ALYSHA KAYE, SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHOR.

There’s also the inevitable feeling of, “What if an even BETTER offer comes along, and I just need to wait it out?”

It’s a tough call to say the least. I wish I had a year to think it over, but I’ll be making a decision before this month is over I’m sure. Wish me luck!

And check out THE WAITING ROOM while it’s still in it’s lovely original format 😉

When Book Bloggers Go MIA…

Standard

blog

Before THE WAITING ROOM was released to Amazon, I did what every self-published author does: I emailed an ARC to any lovely book blogger who was willing to give it an honest review!

Many of them have been my #1 supporters–not just posting blogs, but hosting interviews, sharing on Twitter and Facebook, re-posting on Amazon and Goodreads, and more. These people have shown me more love than some of my own family and friends (sadly).

But what about those other book bloggers?

…you know, the ones who promised an honest review but then…disappeared faster than underage college kids when the cops show up to a frat party.

I mean, I sent you an ARC, man! And a follow-up email!

Is this just something indie authors have to live with? Am I rightfully bummed?
